U.S. higher education faculty’s views on digital education trend toward new post-pandemic status quo

OAKLAND, Calif. – Three-quarters of higher education faculty in the U.S. report they teach at least one fully face-to-face course, compared to 40% teaching fully online or 23% teaching a course that combined face-to-face and online components. These results come from the most recent survey results of over 3,400 faculty from Bay View Analytics. While most courses are in-person for students, this proportion is far below the 96% of faculty who reported teaching fully face-to-face pre-pandemic.

Level of OER awareness among U.S. K-12 teachers reaches an all-time high

OAKLAND, Calif. – Nearly one-third of K-12 teachers in the U.S. are aware of open educational resources (OER)—teaching and learning materials that are free to use, adapt, and share—according to the latest annual survey of K-12 educators conducted by Bay View Analytics. This level of awareness represents an all-time high in the five years of the survey and an increase of four percentage points since last year. In addition, 30 percent of teachers report using OER.

Majority of U.S. college students are worried about meeting their course material costs

August 26,2024, The latest national survey conducted by Bay View Analytics on course material affordability for U.S. college students found 71% of undergraduate students say that they're worried about meeting their course material costs for the current academic term; 30% saying they are “moderately” or “extremely” worried about meeting the costs. Over half of students who participated in the survey say that their course material costs per term is over $200.

Over half of students report paying $200 or more for their course materials for the term.

This national research project, supported by Affordable Learning PA (ALPA) and the Partnership for Academic Library Collaboration and Innovation (PALCI), was conducted in conjunction with the state of Pennsylvania’s comprehensive survey on course material affordability. The goal was to raise understanding of the impact of course material choices on students' academic and general life.

While three-quarters of higher-education trustees (83%), faculty (81%) and administrators (76%) agree that generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) will noticeably change their institutions in the next five years, community college trustees are more optimistic than their community college counterparts, with (37%) saying their organization is prepared for the change coming compared to just 16% of faculty and 11% of administrator respondents.
Those findings are from the 2023-2024 Digital Learning Pulse Survey conducted by Cengage and Bay View Analytics with support from the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT), the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE), College Pulse and the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) to understand the attitudes and concerns of higher education instructors and leadership.

Affordable Learning PA (ALPA) and the Partnership for Academic Library Collaboration and Innovation (PALCI) are pleased to announce the results of their comprehensive survey on course material affordability in Pennsylvania in 2023. The Pennsylvania Course Materials Cost Survey, conducted in partnership with Bay View Analytics, collected 4,306 responses from students across 14 participating institutions during the spring and fall of 2023. Its goal is to understand the impact of course material choices on students' academic and general life.

Nearly two thirds (64%) of U.S. higher education faculty are aware of open educational resources (OER) and nearly one third (29%) require an OER in their course, according to an annual survey of faculty and administrators. Both awareness and use of OER—which are openly licensed and thus free to use, edit, and share—jumped by seven percentage points compared to the 2021-22 school year, reaching their highest levels seen in the 12 years the survey has been administered.

More than three quarters (77%) of K-12 teachers create their own classroom materials to supplement or replace a textbook, and among those who do use a textbook, the same percentage (77%) offer it to their students in digital format, according to the results of an annual survey of K-12 educators and administrators. This gravitation toward self-created and digital materials is complemented by an increasing awareness of open educational resources (OER), which are free to use, edit and share. More than one in four (28%) teachers are now aware of OER and Creative Commons licensing—an uptick of six percentage points compared to the 2021-22 school year.

While almost all higher education faculty have returned to their physical classrooms this school year, their reversion to print textbooks and other instructional materials they preferred before the pandemic hasn’t been nearly as swift, an annual survey of educators by Bay View Analytics found. Faculty and administrators expressed growing acceptance of digital courseware this year compared to earlier surveys, with 74% of both faculty and administrators saying that digital materials provide students with greater flexibility.

While almost all teachers have returned to their classrooms this school year, their reversion to textbooks and other physical instructional materials they preferred before the pandemic hasn’t been nearly as swift, an annual survey of educators by Bay View Analytics found. More than nine in 10 teachers reported having returned to in-person instruction. But only 30 percent of teachers report their instructional materials are entirely or predominantly physical, down significantly from 2018-19 prior to the pandemic when 68 percent said physical materials were the norm.

Bay View Analytics and its partner, the Clayton Christensen Institute, today announce the publication of new factsheets, Reaching toward Recovery. This latest report of K-12 teachers and administrators reveals that while schools are back in-person, things are far from normal. The factsheets are based on the newest in a series of national surveys conducted in October 2021 of 1,074 respondents including teachers and administrators. Overall, the results show that schools are starting to rebound from the impact of the pandemic, with 96% of classes returning to in-person instruction compared to 34% in Spring 2021.
