Bay View Analytics Presentations
Bay View Analytics participates in multiple conferences focused on education research and online learning. Our presentations cover our most current research on distance learning and open educational resources in US K-12 and higher education, and offer an overview of trends over the last decade. The presentations reflect work with multiple partners, including the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Online Learning Consortium, Cengage, Pearson, and the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE), among others.Online Learning Consortium Innovate 24
Course Materials Cost More than Money: Results from a Student SurveyDate: April 24, 2024
The high cost of course materials in higher education has dire impacts on student success, impacting the courses students take, their choice of a minor or major, or even the institution they attend. Our presentation examines the student perspective on costs, and how organizations can help. The study collected 4,306 responses from students across Pennsylvania. Students were asked about their course load, course material costs, and financial aid coverage. The survey then asked students how the cost of course materials impacted their academic success, as well as larger life choices.

Faculty Predict the Future (and learn from the past)Date: April 23, 2024
Faculty believe that their teaching has changed massively since the beginning of the pandemic. They are increasingly embracing technology in their teaching, whether at a distance or in person. However, faculty don't think we have reached the end of these changes - they expect even more in the coming years.
This session presents faculty views - what they believe has changed, what has not, and what they think the future will hold. Has the glow dimmed for online teaching? In what ways will Artificial Intelligence change teaching? Do faculty think their institution is ready for these changes? How optimistic are faculty about their personal future? About the future of their institution? What barriers do they think their students are facing?

Does Location Matter for OER? Regional and institutional differences in higher education OER awareness and adoptionDate: April 13, 2024
Awareness of Open Educational Resources (OER) continues to rise, but levels of awareness vary by type of institution, and tend to be higher in the Western United States. This presentation will review these differences, and discuss potential causes. Over the last decade, OER awareness has increased year-over-year: from 27% in 2014-15 to 64% in 2022-23. This growth in awareness has been matched by similar though lower rates in reported use of OER in the classroom – from 5% in 2015-16 to 29% in 2022-23. However, this growth has not been uniform across the country or between institutions.

UNDERSTANDING THE "WHAT" AND "WHY" OF K-12 INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS TO SUPPORT STUDENT SUCCESSDate: April 13, 2024
This research examines the spectrum of curricula materials employed in K-12 classrooms, differentiating between resources utilized by instructors and those intended for students. The presentation will focus on results from a national survey of K-12 teachers, investigating the differences between grade level and classroom subject as well as adoption and preferences for digital vs. print materials.
Overall, for student focused materials, student tablets or laptops and free online videos emerged as the most regularly used items. These are often utilized alongside self- or school-created quizzes/tests, additional reading, and homework assignments, available in both print and digital formats. While numerous materials see monthly use, daily materials are much less common.

A hopeful future? Preparedness and feelings of optimism-pessimism about the future of post-secondary education in Canada and the USASan José, Costa Rica
Date: November 9, 2023
Findings from both Canada and the USA suggest that those working in post-secondary education expect the future to be different from the present and rate themselves as somewhat ready for these changes. Feelings of optimism and pessimism vary by country and may be explained by contextual factors unique to the differences between Canadian and US culture and policies. Despite the regional differences, results from both countries have found that there are more optimistic respondents than pessimistic ones.

A growing market: OER trends over time in the USA and CanadaSan José, Costa Rica
Date: November 7, 2023
This study examines a decade’s worth of data collected on open educational resources (OER) in Canada and the USA to identify changing trends over time. Considering the heightened integration of technology in teaching and learning over the past few years, largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is reasonable to anticipate that OER use will continue to grow. The inherently shareable nature of OER provides strong support for multi-country research efforts to support the creation of OER that are useful on a global scale.
