Bay View Analytics Publications

Bay View Analytics has been tracking awareness and adoption of Open Educational Resources (OER) since 2012. This series of reports, funded by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, has build a time series of data in both higher education and K-12 to provide an understanding of the impact that OER has had on U.S. education.

These reports from Bay View Analytics, based on U.S. Department of Education IPEDS data, track enrollments from 2012 to 2017 by state and at the national level. The more recent reports (Distance Education State Almanac 2019) provide expanded and updated coverage.

Results are available as a comprehensive single report with information for all fifty states, as well as fifty individual state reports:

These reports from Bay View Analytics, based on U.S. Department of Education IPEDS data, track enrollments from 2012 to 2019 by state and at the national level. They show that national enrollments declined 5.0% over this time period. Students studying at a distance increased by 33%, and the number of institutions offering distance courses increased by 9.8%; 1.9 million fewer students were studying on-campus in Fall 2019 than in 2012.

Bay View Analytics is conducting this ongoing series of reports for a number of leading academic institutions. There are currently six waves of data collection, with more scheduled. The results have been presented in a series of Webinars hosted by Inside Higher Ed (links to the slide decks are included below), and each cycle has included an infographic (also below). There have been a number of reports released as well.

Bay View Analytics began its examination of digital learning in U.S. K-12 education in 2007, with the first national study of k-12 online and blended learning. More recently we have expanded this coverage to include examination of the selection process for curricula materials and the role of Open Education Resources in that process.

Bay View Analytics participates in multiple conferences focused on education research and online learning. Our presentations cover our most current research on distance learning and open educational resources in US K-12 and higher education, and offer an overview of trends over the last decade. Bay View Analytics has been tracking digital learning in U.S. higher education since 2003, and for many years was the only source of such information. These studies cover a wide range of topics, and provide the only time-series examination of attitudes and policies toward digital learning for this universe.
